Woman-centric character was not easy: says Meera Nandan

Meera Nandan, who is mostly seen in supporting roles in Mollywood, has bagged a full-fledged woman-centric role in the yet-to-be-titled Telugu movie directed by Viplav.

Though the actress is thrilled to have bagged a lead role, that too a strong character, she says the going has not been easy. "When director Viplav approached me for the role, I was excited, but only when I started shooting for it did I realise how intense my character was. Since the entire film was based on my character and traces her life from a 14-year-old village girl to a 32-year-old doctor, I was required to adjust my body language accordingly," says Meera, who has completed almost 90 percent of the shoot.

For Meera, the toughest part was shooting her scenes in a remote village. "The place was so isolated with no network connection, that all I wanted was to complete the shoot and get out of there. Since I was playing the central role, I was required to be in almost every scene; I was indeed very stressed out," says Meera, who has been paired opposite Telugu actor Jagapathy Babu, who plays her mentor in the film.

Meanwhile, on the Mollywood front, Meera has made her debut as playback singer in the recently released Mammootty starrer. "Singing Mazhayai was a dream come true for me. It was a melody and I enjoyed every bit singing it. I got the offer from V K Prakash while I was about to fly to Hyderabad for the shoot of my Telugu movie. But when he described the song, I thought of giving it a try and flew to Chennai the very day to record it," says Meera.

In the movie Kunchacko Boban will be seen in the husband's role of Manju Warrier.

One of the expensive directors of the industry, who is known for his impeccable knack for weaving relationships onscreen, says that like his previous outings, emotions and relationships form the mainstay of How old are you? also. "Though my first movie Udayanu Tharam is a cult comedy, it narrates the relation between a husband and wife, and all my movies followed, delve deeper into the intricacies of subtle emotions associated with a relation. After all , we are all humans, how can we live without emotions- love, longing and tears? " quips Roshan. However, the director remained tight-lipped over the other details regarding his forthcoming outing.

The movie that will be scheduled to begin at Trivandrum on February 10th will hit the screens on next May.

Kannada actress Ragini Dwivedi surprised everyone with her Bollywood debut — a dancer number in Prabhu Dheva's R...Rajkumar. She says, "I have been getting offers from Bollywood for a while, but none of them were exciting. When I was approached for the Kaddu Katega number, I thought that this would be better than doing a full-fledged role. Also, debuting with Prabhu Dheva is a dream come true."

However, Ragini admits that she is looking at it as a stepping stone into B-Town. "I believe that if you have the potential, opportunities will come knocking at your door. It has been like that in the South for me, and I am hoping that it won't be very different in Bollywood," she says.

She has done films with almost all of Kannada cinema's A-listers, including Sudeep, Shivarajkumar and Upendra. She is also set to try her luck at the BO with a heroine-centric Kannada cop-thriller, which is due for an end of year release. "I'm really glad the way my career has panned out. I have a few good films with great characters in hand and more is in store," says Ragini.

Post 'Ramaiya Vastavaiya', Girish Taurani has been offered several scripts but he has yet to zero in on a suitable project. He says, "I think new actors like me should raise the bar. We should bring in fresh thoughts and also push the boundaries — be it looks, concept or the plot. However, I don't have any hang-ups when it comes to reading or listening to scripts. For me, the genre is not important. I should be moved by the story."

The actor says he has made a conscious decision to keep his identity separate from that of his production house, and adds, "If a well-scripted movie is being produced by my banner, then I will definitely act in it." He is also quite candid about how up-and-coming actors are viewed currently. "Today, we have started seeing actors as objects and not people. Agar six-pack mein ek pack nahin dikha, toh kya ho gaya? It is human to err. Ultimately, what matters is your talent," he maintains. Having said that, he is quite impressed with some of his contemporaries. "Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan are highly talented," he says.

Girish is currently busy promoting his film, which is being aired on television today, in different cities. "People have liked my work and also the film," he says. Interestingly, if there's one thing that finds its way into his schedule, it's pumping iron. "I just cannot do without it. The day I don't go to the gym, I feel very lethargic and also incomplete," he signs off.

You have been coming to Ahmedabad frequently.
I never get time to explore the city! Everytime I'm here, has been for some promotional event or the other. The roads are so sprawling, I'd love to get my car here sometime! I love Gujarati cuisine and this time I've tried undhiyu, thepla and dhoklas — loved them.

You've shot in Gujarat extensively for R...Rajkumar.
I had no idea Bhuj was so beautiful! The beach in Mandvi with its sparkling blue water and silver sands was awestrikingly gorgeous. We were not supposed to shoot there, but Prabhu sir was so impressed with Mandvi, that we ended up shooting few sequences of the first song there. Some other parts of the films are shot in Gondal Palace.

You've always been known for your chocolate-boy image. Was it a challenge to do this role?
Breaking free from the chocolate hero image wasn't easy. Shooting for this film, was like entering a new world for me, it was very challenging. Prabhu sir asked me to bring something new to work, so I got this unkempt look and even tried to invent my dance/action moves just the way he'd have liked it. I was Prabhu sir's personal robot!

Akshay Kumar says, your co-star Sonakshi Sinha is his lucky charm. Will she be yours too?
I hope she turns to be my lucky charm! She's an awesome actor, good dancer and a lovely person. You've worked with different set of directors, yet you've not settled into any B-town camps. I like to work with different directors because it makes me comfortable. Having said that, I'm working with Vishal Bhardwaj sir after four years.

How do you deal with failure?
It feels bad when a film doesn't work, everyone puts in a lot of effort to make a movie. The positive side to failure — they make me work harder.

Do we see you turning director anytime soon?
I don't want to think of direction at this stage. It is a huge responsibility, Right now, I am channelizing all my energies to acting and want to reinvent myself.

So what's next?
I've two weeks all for myself before I start working on Vishal sir's film. And I'm looking at doing at least three more films before I take a break. I'm very angry with myself because I've not worked hard for last three years and so I need to compensate for that by doing more films.

You're linked with most of your co-stars. Does that affect you?
No, they don't affect me anymore because I take an honest approach by clearing the air about them. And thankfully, for R...Rajkumar, I and Sonakshi haven't been linked, so that's a blessing.

Aamir Khan had to be on medication to keep nausea down for days when the actor was shooting for Dhoom 3's song, Malang.

The song has been shot at a huge height of about 80 feet and Aamir was to rotate 60 times in a minute for the same.

Aamir plays the role of a gymnast in Dhoom 3 and this was required. It is the first time the actor will be doing a thing like that. However, the perfectionist that he is, the actor willingly took it up without complaints and wanted to do it just the right way.

It took the team about 15 days to complete the shoot of the song and Aamir Khan was on medication for those many days. The medication was to help him keep nausea down. As he was at a huge height, taking turns, it is human to feel nauseated.

Also to make sure all is well, the makers of the movie specially called a doctor, who works with gymnasts, to be on the sets to help Aamir.

Dhoom 3 is a high on energy song. In terms of scale or budgets it is going to be massive. The song is around the central theme of gymnastic and will have 200 dancers in the frame.

Spokesperson of Aamir Khan says, "The song was being shot at about 80 feet from the ground. To do this, Aamir was on special medication to be able to perform at ease without major effects on his health"

Actress Yami Gautam says she wants to be careful while choosing films so that she does not let down her audience.

Yami is now doing 'Total Siyapaa' after her first film 'Vicky Donor'.

"It's not really fair to say I am choosy. I think I am a newcomer and of course after getting such good response for the first film, it's very natural that you want to be more careful. As an actor I don't want to do something which I have already done before," Yami said.

"I do not want to do a role which is similar to the previous one or the concept and the genre. That is why I took time and I am glad this offer came. It justified the time that I have taken to sign my second film," she said.

In her previous film, the actress was seen falling in love with a boy from a different caste. In 'Total Siyapaa' too she plays a Punjabi girl, who falls in love with a Pakistani boy, played by Ali Zafar.

"This time I have progressed, have crossed the border. The story is completely different, you can't compare this with my first film. The character of Asha Singh which I play is different, it's a story based in London, and it's a love story between a Pakistani boy and an Indian girl," she said.

Yami thinks the script is the hero of the film.

"You can never predict a hit or a flop but it's about what you are happy doing as an actor. Every actor comes with his or her own mindset," she said.

On the competition in the film industry, she said, "There is competition, I am definitely aware of it, but if I work with pressure and shape my career according to others, that is not me. I am not from the industry, I come from another town and for me reaching here, I am very happy. When I go out and I see the genuine appreciation from the people, that's a big thing for me."

Cricketers aren't new to injuries, and that's why Gulshan Grover was lucky to get advice from his cricketing buddies Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir when he recently sustained an injury to his left shoulder. The actor told us, "I had gone for a charity event to Dhanbad and had to drive from there to Ranchi to catch a flight. I fell on the stage and injured my shoulder.

There was no time to even remove the shirt and have a look. I jumped into the car and then I sustained another injury when the plastic bottle I was drinking from broke when the driver slammed on the brakes. I boarded the flight to Delhi nevertheless." It was in the flight that Grover met Sehwag and Gambhir, who discovered that the actor had sustained an injury. "When I saw them, I hugged them and they realized I was in pain. I told them that I thought I had dislocated my shoulder, as I could not move my arm. They were so sweet and since they deal with injuries, they advised me and suggested that I should not ignore it and seek immediate medical help," Grover told us.

The cricketers also made sure that the actor didn't have to face any trouble. "There was a special car that had come to take them and they offered me a lift. They gave me their numbers and numbers of their specialist doctors. They said that they would call the doctors too. My pain disappeared after their genuine concern. Sehwag even SMSed me after he left and enquired about my well-being," he told us.

When the actor finally got a check-up done, he found that his shoulder was not dislocated. "I have been asked to wear a sling, but I am not wearing it. The shoot for Nila Madhab Panda's film Kaun Kitne Paani Mein had already been delayed because Kunal Kapoor had sustained an injury to his left shoulder. If he (Nila) finds out about my injury, he will have a heart attack. I'll probably tell him later," he laughed.

"Manisha has gone to Nepal and she is there with her family to celebrate Diwali. She is absolutely fine and spending quality time with her family this Diwali," Ghosh told IANS.

The 43-year-old, who has been part of many films like "Bombay", "1942: A Love Story" and "Dil Se", underwent treatment for ovarian cancer in the US for over six months.

What about films?

Ghosh said: "As far as films are concerned, she has not taken up any project so far. Nothing has been confirmed yet."

The movie, which is the sequel to the hit franchise comprising of 'Koi Mil Gaya' and 'Krrish', is the first movie to open with 25.5 crores on a non holiday, pre-diwali Friday. The much awaited sequel released on 1st Nov and received a remarkable response from critics, many of which adorned the movie with 4 stars. The movie also launched its merchandise recently.
