Grapevines are rife with the news that Kuunal Gumar and Ameesha are no more only friends, apart from being business partners. Story :
A hollow story, the tale begins with the married couple Sudheer (Ravi Teja) and Rani (Charmee) whose car breaks down on the way. Nearby, they spot a resort and reach there but then they see really weird behaviour from the staff (subbaraju, supreet, brahmaji). Anyways, they check into the resort but in no time, they find it uncomfortable and strange. Just when they plan to get away from there, they discover that a businessman (brahmanandam) is kidnapped and it is not resort staff but a bunch of thieves. Both Sudhir and Rani get caught by them but the arrival of two gun toting individuals Shiva (Lakshmi manchu) and Richard (sunil) adds another twist. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Presentation :
The director has come up with a nothing storyline and while the presentation was impacting, the narrative was mediocre. The dialogues were witty and were good in few places, the script was alright and the screenplay was average. Background score was good but it could have been avoided at few sequences. The single theme song was impressive. Cinematography is top notch. Editing was crisp. Costumes didn't have much work while the art department was natural and catchy. Ravi Teja comes with a subdued performance but it was matured. Charmee looks naturally sexy and entertains. Prakashraj was good. Lakshmi Manchu was apt and her dialogue delivery was cute. Subbaraju was effective. Supreet was adequate and humorous. Brahmanandam was regular. Brahmaji made his presence felt. Sunil was okay.

Conclusion :
The film has been making news due to its minimum budget and the way it was shot. However, while the technical side of this can be appreciated, there is not much in the film in terms of content. The first half was smooth and breezy but it is the second half which gets monotonous and sometimes silly. Anyhow, the team must be appreciated for the different attempt in cinema making. At the box office, the openings will be good due to the star power and the hype created but success it highly unlikely.

Final Verdict : Just okay!!

Again, here's another story about a bunch of people taking on corruption. Only this time it's a political party comprised of youngsters assisted by a team of a photographer and a journalist. Thol Thirumavalavan's Minsaram told us that students are like electricity and they shouldn't be messed with ("Thota Sethudivenga"). This attempts to tell nothing. It's a purely commercial venture.

K V Anand did nothing in Ayan to provide realism to the film. His treatment with Ko isn't any different. Despite the suspension of disbelief, the film is too big a hairball to swallow. Once again, you have a contrived plot, music numbers and, acrobatic and choreographed fight sequences. Along with all of these, you have stick figures (instead of characters) that serve their respective purposes as plot elements.

Anand has scrimped on writing the characters and hence, the extrinsic acting. Yes, he's written a contrived, implausible plot but what drive the plot are stick figures saying things that you'd least expect them to say and doing things that'd be the last thing you'd expect them to do. In Ayan, the heroine romanced the hero in a song just minutes after the hero lit her brother on fire. Once again, he trivializes the death of a dear one in Ko. He doesn't know where he should or shouldn't insert music numbers (Harris Jayaraj succeeds at playing his part, solo). Don't worry; I'm not giving you more than I should be. The events of a film are as predictable as the results of a random number generator- which is what the film is. I certainly don't mean that as a compliment.

The film is well packaged. It's sold to you. It is wrapped with the prettiest gift wrapping paper. As you unwrap it, the expectations mount. Finally when there's no more to unwrap, what you're left with is a dazzling jewelry box. You open that and you're face to face with a steaming pile of crap. But, the average Tamilian won't dare open it. He's had a hard week at a job that he doesn't particularly enjoy and just the thought of Ko has helped him get by. So, he would rather delude himself about being satisfied with that jewelry box than open it and let his expectations be shattered. I'll tell you this much, Ko is going to be a big success at the box office. It's marketed well and instead of enriching the average Tamilian's life, it exploits his hardship and makes him a victim of crass commercialism.

I'll give K V Anand credit for what he deserves- he's a good music video director and he manages to keep you entertained throughout. I didn't think the film clocked in at anywhere close to three hours. But, he isn't a good filmmaker. Ko staggers throughout, pretending to take risks and after the first misstep; it's nothing but a free fall, all the way. The funny thing is the free fall isn't a smooth ride either. It hits every protruding rock. Just when I thought the film couldn't become more preposterous, it surprised me with the ending, which awakened memories of another film and made me want to throw something at the screen- maybe K V Anand himself.

Vega Tamotia acts a role Laasya in Vaanam

Vega Tamotia is set to rock Kollywood, that too as a rock musician. The submissive city girl of ‘Saroja’ and chirpy village girl of ‘Pasanga’ is playing Laasya, a rock music artiste, in her forthcoming release ‘Vaanam’.

“Again it is a character which I loved to play. My directors (Venkat Prabhu, Pandiraj) have always been kind to me and Krish is one more to the list,” says the model-turned-actress, who hails from Chattisgarh.

Directed by Krish, ‘Vaanam’, a Tamil remake of Tollywood hit ‘Vedam’, has Simbu, Bharath, Anushka, Vega Tamotia, Prakashraj, Sonia Agarwal and others in lead roles. Music is by Yuvanshankar Raja. It is produced by VTV Productions and Magic Box Pictures.

Lust, drugs, mafia and to add a little more spice to it we have Deepika Padukone performing a sensual item number,and it’s all there in Rohan Sippy’s long awaited Dum Maaro Dum. The movie is about different lives in Goa. Every one linked with drugs or love. It starts with Tani and Lorry (Pratriek Babbar) getting admission in US universitiesbut lorry does not get a scholarship forcing him to depart from his love for four years. When one is depressed he looks for comfort in liquor but Lorry goes astep forward and ends up relieving his pain with dope and sex. But his hopes return as his friend gives him a choice to do a minor drug transfer in return for $15000 for his admission. Initially confused he decides not to but eventually turns towards it.Everything is set for him to go, but as luck has it he is caught in the airport by ACP Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan).

The story of Kamath is then shown. Once a corrupted officer of the narcotic department, his life changes when he loses his wife (Vidhya Balan) and son in a car accident. Now he has been appointed to clear all corners of Goa. He appoints a team which includes Mercy and Sandesh Rane who one by one clear out all drug joints of Goa.

Now this rings a alarm in the house of Lorsa Biscuta who is the head of all drug deals in Goa. He owns most of the joints and has a hand in all kinds of business happening in Goa. All drug dealers are running scared and business seems to be slipping away when Biscuta turns to a secret friend Micheal Barbosa, who has never been seen before. Now Kamath is in the hunt for Barbosa. Mean while Lorry has been taken in lock up and fearing the worst for his family he doesn’t say a word. But determined to save him, his friend DJ Joki (Rana Daggubati) keeps talking to Kamath. And also he takes the help of his other friends to root out information about Barbosa just to be caught by Biscuta and beaten by him. Joki is in this because he lost his love Zoe (Bipasha Basu) to Biscuta as she also fell into this drug trap. Zoe now works for Biscuta. Zoe meets Joki and he asks her to help him free lorry from the cops. She falls for him again and after making love to him she records Biscuta talking about deals and gives it to Joki. But Biscuta finds out about this and gets rid of her.

In this encounter Kamath finally finds out whom or rather what Barbosa is. But before he can close the case he is killed by Rane who turns out to be a traitor and an important man of Biscuta. Amidst all the incidents Joki finds out about everything and himself solves the case of Barbosa. He gets hold of all the drugs and calls Biscuta and makes a deal, he asks Biscuta to clear his and Lorry’s name. But while doing so he calls Rane. He takes Rane to the place where he has hid all the drugs. On the way he confronts Rane and kills him.

Next he calls Biscuta and tells him that it is the end of the story. Biscuta runs to the funeral of Kamath. We are then shown that all the drugs are kept inside the electrical furnace. Now with Kamath, everything that Biscuta owns is burnt to ashes. It’s a happy ending for everyone as Tani returns from USA and is reunited with Lorry. Now what exactly Barbosa means is something the movie needs to be watched.

Final verdict :
Your expectations will be failed when you expect a glossy romance, but ofcourse the thrillling elemnet by Ramesh sippy will defenitely win the hearts of people who like action packed movie.

It’s been quite sometime since we have seen a horror film in Telugu cinema. Mangala starring Charmi is one such film which has elements of horror and black magic. The film desperately tries to be a taut thriller and has its fine moments of spine chilling horror which catch you off-guard. But is that enough? Directed by Osho Tulasiram, the film brings together Charmi and Tulasiram once again after their earlier hit film, Mantra. The duo’s latest film, Mangala is about an actress who becomes a victim of a dreaded black magic spell and she has to save herself before the spell brings her closer to death.

story :
Charmi stars as Ammulu, who’s made quite a name for herself as an actress. One day, a crazy fan of hers tries to meet her and in the process she misunderstands that he tried to molest her and she slaps him. Disheartened by this incident, he commits suicide. His father (Pradeep Rawat) tries his best to convince Ammulu to come and save his son who’s refusing to take medicine unless he meets his favourite actress and eventually he dies. Pradeep Rawat plans to take revenge for his son’s death by evoking a deadly spell of Black Magic which would mean a certain death for whom it’s being used. Charmi is the victim this time and the rest of the story is about how she tries to deal with the situation and whether she manages to save herself or not.

Plus Points :
Charmi is the heart and soul of the film. She breathes life into her character and portrays fear to perfection. Her transformation from an innocent actress to a ‘possessed’ girl is proof enough of her acting talent. She shrieks her lungs out, freaks out her director who tries to outsmart her and literally lives her role throughout the film. The guy who played her confidant as Subbu delivers an honest performance. The sound effects in the beginning of the film and the background score raise the bar for this film which unravels as a well crafted thriller till the end of first half. Uttej, Saptagiri are good as the producer and assistant director of a film which goes haywire due to a crazy director’s antics.

Minus Points :
After some spine chilling moments in the first half, the film desperately tries to live up to the expectations when the actual ‘solving-the-problem’ act begins. The final act of the film is a major let down. Is it a little too much to ask for a larger-than-life drama and action to solve an issue as big as what Charmi has to face in the film? After almost ten reels of living through the horror, there’s hardly any good versus evil fight which would make you vouch for the heroine. Mangala is one of those films where the climax just spoils everything which the film has tried to achieve in the end. Moreover, the film unnecessarily tries to up the glam factor by inserting two raunchy numbers with an excuse that Charmi is an actress in the film! The much hyped Aghora factor in the film which is all the more prominent in the posters is a let down in the end.

Technical Departments :
The film scores high in terms of the background score and the sound effects. Music by Viswa is alright and the bum gyrations which Charmi seemed to have mastered for this film are nothing but a so-called ‘commercial element’ meant to attract the male species. Keeping aside the debate whether it’s good or bad, it does serve the purpose! Most of the film has a sepia tone and the cinematography is decent. Osho Tulasiram who wrote the story and screenplay apart from directing the film loses track somewhere in the middle of the film. While the story is well set up and it moves at a break neck speed till the end of first half, it begins to lag with endless drama while trying to reach the final act. But then, the film is a good attempt with a small crew and limited budget.

Bottomline :
Mangala promises a lot more than what it accomplishes and that’s its biggest fault. However, the silver lining on this black (magical) cloud is an incredible performance from Charmi and she holds the fort for most part of the film. And when a film of this magnitude ends up with an anti-climax, one begins to wonder why it had to be so alluring in the beginning! Perhaps no one would ever know who’s to blame; it would be a wise decision to blame the God for playing the spoilsport. Who said ‘Evil’ is bad? In a film like this, perhaps that would have been the saving grace.

Story :
Egyptians (Sonu sood, Pooja Bedi) eyes Shakti Peethams in India to get their mummies back to life. However, they come to know that it is not an easy task to get that Shakti Trishoolam as it was guarded by Rudra (NTR Jr.). Sonu Sood dies in his hands when he tries to get that Trishoolam. His wife (Pooja Bedi) avenges her husband’s death and takes an oath to fulfill his desire. After 27 years, when the time arrives, she sends his men to get the Shakti Trishoolam. For that she has to kidnap Aishwarya (Ileana) who is born with the special powers of Shakti Matha. She is safeguarded by Shakti (NTR Jr.) and what happens next is the rest of the story.

Analysis :
Meher Ramesh seems to have a knack of picking the format of previous blockbusters and writing a new story in the same lines. His first film Kantri is a poor copy of Pokiri and it deservedly ended up as a flop. After making a below average film Billa, which is again a remake of Tamil hit, Meher is back in business.

Now, he took a cue from the biggest blockbuster of Tollywood, Magadheera and has written a story based on Shakti Peethams. When Magadheera is still afresh in the minds of Tollywood audience, making a film on the same lines is a bad idea. And when crores of rupees are at stake it is even more disastrous.

Shakti opens on a dull note. The concept of involving Egyptians in to this story didn’t work at all. The film is set up in 1984 and 2011 where the people are civilized and the kingly rule was vanished. But the director deliberately ignored many logics and blindly told whatever he felt like. May be he might have thought that anything is possible in a socio fantasy flick. When he has involved politicians, police and also military into this it is no longer a fantasy film, especially when the director revealed the period of time that the story is running in.

Even after ignoring logical errors, Shakti seems unconvincing and meaningless due to the lackluster script. The narrative too weak that you lose focus on the happenings within no time. First half of the film is sheer time waste. Interval twist is borrowed from Pokiri again.

The flashback part involving Rudra character has to be the lifeline for this film. But sadly that has turned out to be the major disaster. Meher Ramesh directly lifted dialogs and happenings from Magadheera in this part. Even NTR’s getup and outfit resembles to that of Charan’s in it. When the director faltered at the crucial juncture, there is no way that a film could survive. He might have tried to end the film with some sense so that the audience might have given him grace points. But the climax is ridiculously horrible.

Performances :
NTR Jr. is the only saving grace in this film. If not for him, audience might have walked out of the auditorium by the interval point. His performance as Shakti is cool. He looked dashing in those blazers in post interval scenes. However, he should have taken care on Rudra’s getup. It didn’t suit him at all. Even NTR diehard fans would be disappointed with it.

Ileana plays a spineless character which hardly gives her a chance to act. She has sizzled in the songs though. Sonu Sood’s role is limited and he is wasted. Pooja Bedi doesn’t know the basics of acting and watching her on screen is sheer torture. Manjari Fadnis played Rudra’s wife. There are hordes of actors in this film and none of them are given a purposeful role. Everyone looked pale and dull due to poor characterizations and bad dialogues.

Tehnicalities :
Mani Sharma’s music is another weak link in this movie. None of the songs are worth hearing repeatedly. Hari giri Nandini… song was good on ears but the director spoilt it with his picturization. Background score is bad too. Keeravani might have done a better job for this film. Dialogues by Satyanand are weak. None of the jokes worked and also the dialogues in crucial scenes are a big let down.

Sameer Reddy’s cinematography is good. Art department did a very good job. So called visual effects aren’t great. Producer has hyped this movie as the costliest film in Tollywood history but the grandeur is completely missing on screen. Except for shooting in number of locations, Shakti doesn’t possess any visual splendor.

Meher Ramesh yet again proved that his skills are limited. He should stick to commercial flicks rather jumping the genres.

Final Verdict :
Shakti is a major disappointment for all the hype it generated. Now the economics of this film completely depend upon the fate of other releases and holidays season. Given its budget and the high rates it was sold for, Shakti would find it really tough to get into a safe zone.

Vijay's house in Saligramam attacked

Vijay's house in Saligramam was attacked by some miscreants on Tuesday (April 19). The unidentified persons threw stones and broke the window panes.

Vijay vacated his Saligramam house a few months ago and moved to his new house in Neelangarai. But he rented a portion to musician Vijay Anthony. It is said that the miscreants might have attacked thinking Vijay resides at the Saligramam house.

Meanwhile, Vijay has filed a complaint and has stepped up the security of the house. Though it is too early to suspect anyone, it is believed that his association with a political party could be one of the reasons behind the attack.

It is not guarantee that films with ingredients like love, romance and fun will appeal the youths. Director Remo D'Souza has managed to pump in lots of fun into his latest film F.A.L.T.U but it has it's share of shortcomings.

F.A.L.T.U. is a comedy flick about a youth, who tries to do something new and weird to help out his troubled friends. Jackky couldn't get admission for higher studies, as he is terrible at studies. He comes across Pooja and Angad, who also failed to get admission. This circumstances makes him start Fakirchand And Lakirchand Trust University (F.A.L.T.U.).

The film tries to drive home the importance of alternative education. It showcases the students of the fake college becoming winners by doing what they love. But the director fails to bring in logic to the story.

The music of the film is soothing and executed well but the script of the films is weak. Jackky has tried to bring in charm but not very convincing. Riteish Deshmukh and Arshad Warsi too have failed to evoke much laughter though they are known in the genre. However, Pooja Gupta looks lovely while Angad Bedi and Chandan Roy Sanyal have done their job well.

The film has lots of flip sides but it has a message to take home. On the whole, F.A.L.T.U is a film for the youths – with lots of fun and energy. Go for it if you are game for illogical fun!

Abhishek says I want to work with Rani

Talking about the film in a recent interview, Abhishek Bachchan said that he wants to change audiences' perception about him being a non-actor with the film. Abhishek's last release Raavan, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se and Game have been box office disasters and he wishes to set cash registers ringing with Dum Maaro Dum.

The actor also candidly talked about how favourite co-stars. He said, "Rani is the best co-star I have ever worked with. She's beautiful and is a brilliant actor." When asked if he would like to work with her again, Abhi promptly replied, "Of course, I would love to work with her."

It can be recalled that Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, who have worked in films like Yuva, Bunty Aur Babli, Laga Chunri Mein Daag and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, had been linked up with each other before Abhi-Ash's marriage. There were also rumours that the two are planning to tie the knot. Though audience felt that Jr. Bachchan and the bong beauty made an awesome couple, the two refrained from working together.

However, now with Abhishek's confession, we look forward to seeing Bunty and Babli light up the screen again with their amazing chemistry.

To be frank, ‘Christian Brothers’ is a film that baffles me when I sit down to write the review. To be honest, I am not impressed with the movie. I don’t even feel like seeing it once again; I am one of those who’d love to see some of the old hits of Joshiy again and again. Personally speaking, I won’t give the film as much rating as I am going to.

But when I ask myself as to what else I expected to see, I am baffled. Indeed ‘Christian Brothers’ is almost exactly what I expected it to be- a smaller version of ‘Twenty-20’. It’s basically a film for Mohanlal fans and is scripted in such a manner as to give space to the co-stars too.

Captain Verghese Mappilai (Saikumar) has two sons and two daughters. The elder son Christie (Mohanlal) is in Mumbai, with lots of underworld connection. The younger one (Joji) is abroad; his father had sent him to become trained for priesthood, but now he has fallen in love with a girl named Meenakshi (Kavya Madhavan) and has left the seminary. It’s when Meenakshi, who reaches Kerala and whose father (Devan) is the Home Minister, is kidnapped and a huge amount demanded as ransom that Christie is called in. Christie is now said to be a high-profile police informer and he is brought in to save Meenakshi. He does that, quite easily, but very soon he himself is arrested, on charges of murder. It’s the very daring and upright police officer Joseph Vadakkan (Suresh Gopi) who is up in arms against him. Then enters Andrews (Sarath Kumar) from Mumbai, who has a purpose behind his arrival.

Into this is woven the story of the villainous Kumaran Thampy (Vijayaraghavan) and his equally villainous sons and son-in-law, who are all against Verghese Mappilai and family for some other reasons. It’s action, drama, sentiments all moving on to a predictable climax.

There’s nothing new or great about ‘Christian Brothers’, except perhaps the coming together of Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Dileep and Sarath Kumar. But on the whole it’s a Mohanlal film and all the other characters have been created to prop him up.

Since ‘Christian Brothers’ is almost the thing that I hoped to see, I was not totally disappointed and I am sure that you too won’t be disappointed. It’s what we want it to be or rather what we expect it to be.

Performances
‘Christian Brothers’ is not much about performances; it’s more about the presence of popular stars. Almost all of them, including Mohanlal, have put in OK kind of performances. There is nothing outstanding. The only actor who rises above the ordinary is perhaps Saikumar, who is sort of overshadowed by the presence of so many stars. The actresses however lack importance. The key roles could have been done by anyone, especially the characters played by Dileep and Sarath Kumar and hence it’s evident that these stars have been brought in just to make it a star-studded affair.

Technical aspects
The cinematography, editing and art-work suit the theme and contribute to making the film a ‘big’ thing.

Music
Songs, penned by Kaithapram and set to tune by Deepak Dev are just about OK.

Script
Sibi.K.Thomas and Udayakrishna once again does what they have been doing all these years- namely mixing up things that are very much familiar and oft-repeated and coming up with a blockbuster. They must be appreciated for the effort they have put in to give each of the four key actors due importance.

Direction
Joshiy is very much in control of things, as he usually is. The film is in essence a Joshiy film, but I won’t say that I liked it as I had liked some of his all-time bests.

Overall Verdict - Strictly for fans, OK for a one-time watch. Nothing great!

Later in the evening, in a glitzy event that kickstarted the Indian Premier League, the baadshah of Bollywood decided to inject local flavour to the proceedings... and shook a leg to the superhit Naka Muka... number, apart from a couple of fast-paced Tamil kuthu songs and Bollywood numbers.

His team might not have had successful seasons in the past but that's not deterring him from supporting the bunch of cricketers that he's picked. So, what does he reckon about Team Kolkata Knight Riders chances this time around in Indian Premier League (IPL)? "They're a bunch of smart and good cricketers. The team is looking great and I hope they perform well." It's evident that the actor-team owner is banking heavily on the new captain of the team, Gautham Gambhir, to deliver the goods. "Gauti is a good man with a good head. I'm sure he'll do well."

So, has he learnt any Bengali now that he's been with Team Kolkata for the past few years? "Oh no, I haven't. I just know a few words."

I walked out of the theatre that had just screened Nil Gavani Sellathey thinking, "Wow, finally." After an entire month of film releases being nothing short of crap, this is just what I needed. Before I saw it, I read online that it was inspired from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I had to check out the trailer, which turned out to be impressive enough for me to invest some expectation in the film. "Hmm, looks good," I thought.

Five friends (two couples and a fifth wheel) are planning a trip. It doesn't start right there though; it spends the first forty minutes letting us peer into their lives. After bickering with each other, they decide on going to a small village called Thellur choosing to leave their cell phones behind. En route, they ask a passerby for directions and that's when they become part of ongoing trouble in the district.

For the first forty-five minutes, director Anand Chakravarthy gives the audience what they want to see and then he breaks into new territory. Characterization is well done; every character in the film has attributes that the others don't have. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre had characterization but didn't have character development. You know who the characters are but you don't know how they've become what they are.

Nil Gavani Sellathey has just as good characterization but in developing the characters, it exceeds the original. It provides explanation for everything adding more depth. It walks the line between horror exploitation and character drama without getting melodramatic. Few events might seem questionable but the characters have been developed well enough to make them possible, if not probable. The film's pace slows down and stalls to build the suspense, which is just why it works. While the acting is adequate, it is the sound design and Selvaganesh's score that play a major part at driving the film. J Lakshman's Cinematography is exotic with stunning visuals, mainly because of the sepia tint. You want to pause each scene and just stare. The film will give you jolts that you haven't felt in a while but due to its technical achievement, it lacks the raw intrinsic nature of the original. I'm not complaining; just wish it had more of a bang.

Every member of the crew demonstrates talent but this is Anand Chakravarthy's show. He succeeds in both the acting and the directing departments. He has a lot of tricks up his sleeve with which he misdirects you, again and again. Tamil Cinema has good directors but hardly any good screenwriters. With this film, Chakravarthy qualifies as both. He isn't interested in simply reporting events and telling you what happened. He wants to tell you how those things happened. Chakravarthy, continue your journey as an independent filmmaker and don't let bags of cash make you succumb into making Kollywood trash.

Nil Gavani Sellathey, inspired from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is a hell of a remake. It is the most significant film that's come out this year.

Santosh Sivan’s Urumi is a miniature masterpiece of moods, emotions, anxieties ruled by a thirst for revenge. The film unfolds like a ballad and is a sweet and simple fairy tale. The 170 minutes film works to a large extent to its perfect casting, fantastic performances, soothing score and technical brilliance.

Santosh has made it like how a period drama should be made without too much talk about freedom struggle, no bombastic dialogues or playing to the gallery for heroism. His vision and concept gives this epic the feel of a Brave Heart or Gladiator.

It provides us a new insight into the hearts and minds of ancient heroes and shot in locations that reflect the period as everything looks fresh, green and clean and one can feel even the mist. Another major plus is that there are hardly any CG special effects that one would associate with a period war film.

Shankar Ramakrishnan’s script is simple and straightforward and keeps the narrative absorbing and inspiring. The film starts in the present day with a modern don’t care youth Krishna Das (Prithviraj) and his friend (Prabhu Deva) having a jolly good time. A big corporate offers Krishna Das a bomb for his ancestral property in Kerala.

On his arrival in Kerala to sign the papers, he learns the truth about his land and ancestors, which is told in a flashback. A brave warrior (Arya), wants to kill Vasco da Gama, the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India. But he is brutally killed by the invaders and his son Chirakkal Kelu Naynar (Prithviraj) is out to take revenge with a golden Urumi, that he makes with the ornaments of dead women and children who were burnt alive in a ship that was going to Mecca. It was set on fire and sunk under the instructions from Vasco Da Gama.

The film is spread between the second and third visit of Gama to India and chronicles a varied version of how Gama could have met a bloody death in 1524 AD. Kelu is supported by his childhood Muslim buddy Vavvali (Prabhu Deva). In the journey he meets warrior princess Ayesha (Genelia), who has her own axe to grind against the foreign invaders. Will they be able to kill Vasco Da Gama ?

The major highlight of the film is the performances of its lead actors. Prithviraj as Kelu Naynar is dashing. You cannot take your eyes of him, it’s a difficult role and he has come out with flying colours especially in the climax scene. Prabhu Deva is there in as many frames as Prithviraj, and is a real treat to watch. He does comedy and romance with ease and the chat song with Nithya is a scream.

However it goes without saying that this is Genelia’s show. She has shed her bubbly image for an out of the world controlled performance and her Kalaripayattu action scenes are thrilling. Nithya Menen looks pretty and is a scene stealer, while Jagathy is outstanding. Amol Gupte, Alex, Robin and others are lifelike. There is also walk in cameo appearances by Arya, Vidya Balan and Tabu.

Music of Deepak Dev enriches the film with Aaro nee aaro, Chimmi Chimmi and the theme music is haunting. A pat for Shankar Ramakrishnan for his intricately crafted script, super editing by Sreekar Prasad without any gimmicks and eye catching beautiful camera work by Sivan and his assistant Anjuli Shukla.

Santosh Sivan has come out with a story of valour with an admirable degree of craftsmanship and clarity. The producers Santosh, Prithviraj and Shaji Natesan can be proud of this epic.

Urumi is a fairy tale fantasy film that has a heart and technical artistry. Go for it.

A.R. Rahman launches his Biography

Music maestro A.R. Rahman got a little nostalgic remembering his old days, during the launch of his biography 'A.R. Rahman: The Spirit of Music' in Mumbai Wednesday night.

The book has been penned by renowned writer Nasreen Munni Kabir.

The launch was also attended by Rahman's family, including his wife, sister and mother and filmmakers like Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, Subhash Ghai, Ashutosh Gowarikar and Imtiaz Ali.

'I want to thank Munni for having the patience to sit with me and do this and to have an intension to do this,' Rahman said.

'While working on this book with Munni, I relived many old memories. But the one moment that I relived and can never forget was when I had no money to buy any equipment. I needed four lakh rupees and I didn't have that money. So my mother immediately sold off my sister's jewellery and gave me the money,' he said.

The book will provide a fascinating window into the world of the 'Mozart of Madras', who became the first Indian composer to win two Academy Awards for the 2008 blockbuster 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Talking about her experience of writing the book, Kabir said: 'The idea of writing this film was actually trying and finding a way of creating a conversational biography that would record a person's thinking, a sweep of one's life upto now and some understanding of his craft and his personality.'

She thanked Rahman for giving her the opportunity to write the book.

The book took approximately eight years to finish, and Kabir said she witnessed no major changes in Rahman in all these years, even though his popularity rose manifold during the course of this period.

'The interaction with Rahman took place in many countries, spread over many years. He has changed a little bit. The core person is the same but the life is different. There are lot more pressures, tremendous success but he wears his success lightly, which means that he is still very humble about it and the people he respected and regarded then are the same people, he respects and regards even now,' the author said.

The film is a story of four strangers who are invited by Kabir Malhotra to an island in Greece only to discover that they should have never went there. The four strangers over here are Neil Menon [Abhishek Bachchan], O.P. Ramsay [Boman Irani], Tisha Khanna [Shahana Goswami] and Vikram Kapoor [Jimmy Sheirgill].

The four characters have no contacts with each other till they come to the Samos island, Greece. Beginning of the movie, Anupam Kher tells out why they are invited to the island and what they should do. As a part of the mission Neil travels from Istanbul to Turkey and then immediately lands in Mumbai. Though the action episodes are picturised taking into the account of action genre, Neil does his set out work with so ease that one wonders where’s the reality quotient in it considering Game coming from Farhan Akhtar.

Neil’s true identity is revealed later. God knows what was the writer upto in revealing it. Immediately after this all of the four land in the same place where they began on hearing some mishap to Tisha. As the story progresses one can usually identify the mystery, so what’s the point of being a murder drama/thriller, can’t understand?

Director Abhinay Deo, a familiar face in the ad world was more on capturing the locales beautifully than making the story more engrossing. In locations such as Greece, Istanbul, London, and Bangkok apart from Mumbai, Game’s story unfolds. Even though Deo was given a weak subject to deal with, he hardly matches up to the expectations that Farhan and Ritesh have bestowed on him.

Though the first half of the film is full of twists and turns, the second half is placid. Writing is at its weakest in Game and the film fails only with regards to it. Wonder whether Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy are behind the music of the film as no song grabs one’s attention.

Abhishek is given a character which hardly has any scope to perform. Sarah does an ok job with her debut. She looks gorgeous in the film. Boman as the Thai politician over acts. Shergill and Sahana do there best in miniscule roles. Kangana as the police officer is a saving grace to the film though there are some problems with her diction.

Special mention for the Cinematographer Kartik Vijay Thyagarajan who does an excellent job. One of the best camerawork’s that one can associate off late. Farhan Akhtar’s dialogues are good. Ram Sampath’s background is laudable compromising the defects of music trio.

The chase sequence on the roof-tops of Turkey is pulsating to watch. Moments like these are very minimal in Game when they should have been more.

On the whole a Video Game in home is more entertaining than this Game.

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan invited by Sachin Tendulkar

Even two days after the finale of the World Cup tournament and India’s eventual victory over the Sri Lankans in the final match, the nation seems to be running cricket fever.

And the man to whom the men in blue dedicated the coveted trophy has just begun his celebrations.

The feeling of winning the cup is still yet to sink in. Buzz has it that Sachin Tendulkar has invited Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan to join him for the celebrations.

Amitabh Bachchan who was very much superstitious until the final match tweeted, "Abhishek and Aishwarya been invited by Sachin for a celebration ..guess I shall have to wait till the morning for the excitement!"

The legendry actor, who along with his son and daughter-in-law went out in the streets like commoners to cheer for the victorious Indian side, is yet to call it a day for rejoicing the historic moment.

And now with the first family of Bollywood making it to Sachin's bash, the party for the Bachchans seems to have just begun.
