Anushka Sharma detained at Airport for 8 Hours

Anushka Sharma’s return to Mumbai from IIFA in Toronto has been nightmarish. Around 2 pm on Monday, she was detained at Mumbai airport when upon routine check-up, the assistant commissioner of the custom department found undeclared jewellery and expensive watches in her luggage.

The actress was reportedly ushered aside for detailed questioning, even though sources close to her maintained that she was held up for mere completion of some paperwork.

The officials found diamond and gold jewellery and branded watches from Anushka’s baggage. According to a custom official, Anushka defended herself by saying that she had taken the jewellery and fashion accessories from India and therefore bringing them back to the country excludes her from paying duties. But the custom department claims that Anushka did not declare the jewellery before leaving the country.

Reports say that the actress has been booked under Sections 75, 111 L, M and D of the Customs Act for non-declaration of goods and evasion of duty. Anushka has reportedly handed over to the custom department the jewellery bills and a letter from a watch company to defend her case. The custom department is still verifying the veracity of the documents.

Meanwhile, the actress has been allowed to go home. But if it is found that she bought the jewellery abroad and was bringing it to India, she may have to pay a duty of 36.05 percent of the jewellery’s total worth. Worse still, she may have to shell out a hefty redemption fee to take the confiscated jewellery back.

Action satisfaction

Arulnidhi, grandson of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi garnered all attention making his debut in director Pandiraj's Vamsam. His second - Udhayan has hit the screens today. Directed by Chaplin, it is a city slicker and expectations are high. Lets check out how the movie is.

Story

Udhayan (Arulnidhi) works as an assistant manager in a bank in Chennai. A fun-loving youth, he falls in love with a young girl Priya (Praneetha). He straightaway urges her to marry him. Clear in his thoughts and actions, he is admired by all. Santhanam works in the bank as his colleague. Meanwhile an old man (Ashish vidyarthi) runs from pillar to post searching for Udhayan. Meanwhile Priya's father who works as an auditor with a baddie in the city wants his boss help to separate the lovers. As it happens Udhayan and the gang have scores to settle. Udhayan is knifed. The latter part is all but how Udhayan sets all things right and crucial part played by Ashish Vidyarthy in it.

Performance

Arulnidhi, who played a soft-spoken rustic youth in Vamsam has taken the other way round here. He dons the role of a city-bred youth. He looks trendy and appears in stylised costumes. He has proved his mettle in stunt sequences and shakes his legs too. Praneetha appears as cute bubbly girl and utilise the opportunity well. Santhanam is as usual in a prime form evoking laughter with his one-liners. Ashish Vidyarthy is back in Tamil playing a pivotal role. He emotes well. All the characters b;lend well and give the desired output on screen.

Analysis

Chaplin, who worked as associte to many filmmakers has used all his experience to weave a thrilling storyline and the fact is that he executes it well on screen. He has given an image makeover for Arulnidhi. The film proceeds in a lighter vein and takes an action-packed turn as it progresses. The twists are set at right places and Chaplin's understanding of audience's pulses is evident . The last few minutes are really racy and rivetting.

Technicalities

S D Vijay Milton has been a pillar of strength for the director. His lens captures the events in a racy and rivetting manner. Editing by Kishore is razor sharp. It adds pep to the whole proceedings. The highlight of the movie is however the songs by Manikanth Kadri, Son of saxophone player Kadri Gopalnath. He mesmerises with his catchy tunes. Also the background score livens up the proceedings.

Karthi pairs up with Anushka Shetty

Karthi’s next film after Saguni is with director Suraaj. Anushka, who was supposed to do Siruthai with Karthi, will be paired opposite groom-to-be Karthi with director Suraaj, who gave hits like Padikathavan and Maapillai.

This untitled movie is going to be a complete entertainer as it will have masala, action and romance. The director felt Karthi to be the right fit for the role and waited for him to complete Saguni. Anushka who couldn’t do the Tamil version of her Telugu movie Vikramarkudu is happy to work with Karthi. Anushka was paired opposite Surya in Singam and the movie was a hit. Let’s see if Anushka is lucky for Karthi too.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is pregnant

The beautiful Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and her actor husband Abhishek Bachchan are expecting their first baby. This news was first revealed by dadaji Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his microblogging site “I am going to become a grandfather.. Aishwarya expecting.. So happy and thrilled!!!”

A former Miss World Aishwarya, 37, has been married to actor Abhishek Bachchan for more than four years. Aishwarya’s media manager also confirmed the pregnancy but did not give more details.

Ileana to play an old woman in Barfee

"All the three lead actors are playing out-of-the-box, and extremely interesting characters in Barfee," said Anurag Basu, the film's director, "Ranbir Kapoor, as everyone knows, is playing a deaf and mute boy, Priyanka Chopra is not mentally-challenged as reported, but is mildly autistic (a form of mental illness that causes a person to withdraw into a private world of fantasy and be unable to communicate with others or respond to his/her real environment) in the film.

Ileana D'Cruz, on the other hand, is playing a character who will be seen aging from a 19-year-old to 30 to a 65 year-old," stated Basu. The 24-year-old D'Cruz is a model-turned actress, who has been part of several South films including the superhit, Pokkiri. Barfee is her first Hindi film.

The shooting of Barfee took off on June 14 at Darjeeling where Ranbir and Ileana are participating in a 10-day schedule. The hill station is Ranbir's hometown in the film and will be showcased as never before. After a 15-day gap, the shooting will continue in Mumbai, where Priyanka will start working for her part in August. As for the title Barfee, it was chosen because Ranbir's name in the film is Murphy, and being mute, he mumbles it as barfee!

Asin not a Bollywood Material?

Asin Thottumkal was one of the top actresses in Tamil film industry before deciding to head for Hindi films. She got the chance to enter Bollywood through Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini in 2008, and it gave her the break she had been dreaming of, but she has done only two films since then. This has made many think if she is not a Bollywood material or too choosy while accepting film offers.

Many might have thought Asin would go far in Bollywood after the stupendous success of her debut film, Ghajini, but she managed to grab only London Dreams, which failed at the box office. She has done only three films in over three years, which is very less for an actress of her looks and talent. Her latest film, Ready, with Salman Khan, has done exceptionally well at the box office but we haven’t heard of her signing any big film.

Sources said that she has only one film at the moment, and that is Housefull 2, a sequel to the hit film Housefull, where she has to share the screen space with Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez and Zarine Khan. Rumours were doing the rounds that she would do Vishal Bharadwaj's Two States with Shahrukh Khan, but it is not sure if it will take off following Shahrukh’s indifferent attitude towards the film.

It was reported that Asin refused to wear a bikini in Housefull 2, forcing the makers to look for an alternative. But the fact is – actress who have no qualms showing skin on screens have better prospect in the film industry. So, it looks like her choosy attitude while selecting films and her refusal to do glamorous roles have worked against her.

Well, she has to look for variety, including glamorous and bold films, if she wants to survive in Bollywood!

Rajinikanth getting discharged today?

Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth is reportedly getting discharged from the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre in Singapore today, June 14. According to the hospital sources, the Kollywood star has responded very well to the treatment and he no longer needs dialysis. So he is being released from the hospital.

After getting discharged, Rajinikanth is going to spend a few weeks in Singapore. So he is moving into an upmarket apartment that his family has taken for their further stay in the city. He will take complete rest for a period of convalescence in the city. Meanwhile, he will visit the hospital for regular checkups.

However, the ill-health of Rajinikanth has delayed the shooting of his next movie Rana, which features Deepika Padukone and Sonu Sood in the leads. Now, director KS Ravikumar is busy finalizing other cast of the movie. Sources say that Rajini will be ready for its shooting by the end of this month.

The hero’s ruffian image, along with a solid script and neat packaging worked big time for Vimal in Kalavani. Sadly all these basic elements are lacking in his new film Ethan. It is directed by LK Suresh and a remake of his Telugu Kalavar King (2010) which had Nikhil and Swetha Prasad in the lead.

The first half of the film moves at a bullock cart pace while the second half drags at snail pace. The screenplay dips and is monotonous making it a tedious watch. The only silver lining is Vimal who tries to carry the entire film on his shoulders, helped some wisecracks and his mimicry act which is a riot.

Our hero Sathyamurthy (Vimal) is from small town Kumbakonam. Satya is basically a con, as he borrows money from hardened moneylenders by sweet talking them and does business which fails. He is only son of a disciplined school teacher DK (Jayaprakash) who has never borrowed a single pie in his life and a naïve mother (Pragathi). Most of the time Satya is running around the town looking for cover from his angry creditors.

The smooth talking Satya meets up with a girl Selvi (Sanusha), who is trying to escape from her cousin, a thug who wants to marry her by force. Due to his over smartness Satya and Selvi become the hunted from the villain. This leads to the twist as Satya tries to change a new leaf but is caught by the unfolding situations.

Vimal, tries his best to overcome the inherent weaknesses in the script, as he is able to get the audience sympathy. He is the one bright spot in the film. Sanusha has to smile, look perplexed and then cry. Jayaprakash as the father does his routine role effectively while Singampuli’s comedy makes you smile. Taj Noor’s music is let down, not even one hummable number.

On the whole, Ethan does not work. The film is laboured, slow and one gets the feeling it is outdated.

Final Verdict: Disappointing
